Best Writing Retreats in India (2026 Edition)

India has more writing retreats than it did five years ago, and the ones worth attending have a distinct point of view. This is a short, honest guide to the best writing retreats in India in 2026 — where they are, who they're for, and how to choose.

    Parched — Ladakh, September 2026

Our own retreat, and the reason this guide exists. Parched is a six-day writing retreat in Ladakh, mentored by Sahitya Akademi Awardee K. Jayakumar and author Megha Vishwanath (Unseen). Intimate cohort, one-on-one mentorship, and the high desert of the Himalayas. Best for: writers with a specific project who want craft attention.

Himalayan Writers' Retreat — Shivapuri, near Rishikesh

A long-running programme with a strong workshop tradition. Set in the foothills rather than the high mountains — good for writers who want the Himalayas without the altitude. Best for: workshop-heavy learners, first-time retreatants.

    Sangam House — near Bangalore

An international residency rather than a retreat — writers apply to be in residence together. Selective, unstructured, and prestigious. Best for: mid-career writers who want time and community more than teaching.

Bound Writers' Retreat — rotating locations

Runs multiple retreats a year in Goa, Kerala, and the hills. More publishing-industry-oriented and networking-heavy. Best for: writers exploring the market and thinking about a book deal.

    How to choose

Ask three questions: How small is the cohort? Who is actually mentoring — a name you can look up? What does a day look like? A good retreat answers all three clearly on its website. If it doesn't, ask.

The best retreat is the one that gives your book what it needs — not the one with the best photographs.

    Applying to Parched

Parched runs 1–6 September 2026 in Ladakh with a small cohort. Seats are limited and each application is reviewed personally. If a Himalayan writing retreat sounds right for your work, read the full details and apply here.
